ABSTRACT

107The water tower in the urban district of Machabaya, in the south-eastern part of the city of Arequipa, is a tall cylindrical construction, about 8 metres in diameter. With its body of grey massive concrete, it reaches about 18 metres into an often high-blue sky. The water tower is constructed to serve several functions: it penetrates 150 metres into the subsoil from where it pumps up groundwater, which is then stored in a white reservoir on top of the tower. It also serves as a point of distribution of water – through pipes and valves – to the urban population in its proximity.
