Many development projects have focused on technology improvements aiming at higher crop yields. Planting bushes to fix sand or constructing dikes in the fields against surface water and soil runoff have, for example, been some of the main technologies introduced in Belgou. Such technologies have primarily been targeted towards men as they are responsible for most agricultural activities like preparing the fields for cultivation, sowing crops, weeding and harvesting. The non-governmental organization (NGO) aimed to decrease women's labour burden as the NGO was concerned about the fact that women simply did not have any time for rest and leisure after completing all their tasks. The technological change from manual millet grinding to a hammer mill thus provided the women with an opportunity to gain an income, which primarily used to be reserved for the men. By having their own income, women also began feeling that they could gain more power in the household.
