ABSTRACT

111Waste and water management are two of the biggest challenges for the government of Kiribati, an island nation in the Pacific consisting almost entirely of small and low-lying atolls. waste and water are entangled and changes in one frequently affect the other. Management often means inserting technologies in between people and waste or water. However, ‘technology’ does not necessarily mean an artefact created by Western science, which is then introduced to the local population. If we think of technology broadly, it also includes local ways of management and innovation.
