Unpacking the Dog Sledge book
The significant role of two technologies, involving factories and trees, were repeatedly highlighted locally as providing for possible solutions and positive societal changes. The Greenlandic government is therefore looking into ways to harvest the enormous quantities of run-off water produced by the ice sheet for hydroelectric production on a large scale. The aim is to offer industries cheap and green energy in order to boost the ailing Greenlandic economy and to create an economic basis for greater self-determination. The reduction of livelihood options in Greenland is solved by planning a factory that utilizes the melting water and thereby produces jobs. The problems of drought and climate change in Ghana are solved by planting trees. During fieldwork in northern Ghana on climate change and development in the context of the severe floods of 2007, many conversations touched upon trees and their relationship to environmental changes.
