ABSTRACT

On the shore of the south-east Indian state of Tamil Nadu, a small piece of land is formally designated as cultural heritage to be preserved and cultivated in accordance with its own unique nature and history. The place is a tamil fishing village called Tharangambadi, housing some 7,000 inhabitants. Like other settlements along the shore of India, the place was also once a European, in this case Danish, colonial trading post going by the name of Trankebar. In light of this past, the place is seen as historic.
