ABSTRACT
Every text has its own unique features, ambiguities, and challenges. So, how can you expect to use the same close reading strategy for every poem or passage a student encounters? You can’t. Your approach to each text must be tailored not only to that particular piece but also to your instructional purpose for reading it. If not, you are doing a disservice to the text and to your students.
