ABSTRACT

Individuation and the emergence of spirituality can take place in almost every phase of life, in dimensions of course dependent on the stage of psychological and cognitive development at the time. This realization may be the beginning of wisdom if it becomes a window into existential truth, and therefore an occasion for deeper than usual self-examination. The concept of individuation in Jungian psychology, it should be remembered, embraces the development of consciousness in all of its stages, in conjunction with the emergence of the self in its full complexity. Paying attention to this process is what the author refers to with the phrase "minding the self". From a psychological perspective, they would suppose that he has lost contact with the self. Ego and self are not in harmony, but they are in contact. The struggle is engaged between the ego and larger, stronger, contrary tendencies active in the psyche.
