ABSTRACT

In Chapter 1, we examined the different dimensions of governance to which neighborhood associations (NHAs) contribute. In this chapter and the next, we will investigate the basic characteristics of NHAs. To round out our understanding of their features, we look in this chapter at the designated terms for NHAs, their establishment year and origins, the scale of NHA organizations (measured in terms of the number of participating households), and the scale of their finances. In the following chapter, we will examine the features of the management styles of NHA organizations as well as those of their central personnel figures, including their presidents and directors.
