ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the importance of promoting self-regulation during the early childhood years and provides specific strategies and tips for teaching self-regulation in preschool. Embedding self-regulation into classroom management practices is one important way that early childhood educators can support self-regulation development. Classroom management techniques can be used to provide external regulation for children, helping ensure smooth classroom functioning, while children are developing and learning the skills they need to make the shift to internal regulation. This type of classroom management and organization can lay the foundation for effective self-regulation and learning by helping children identify and focus on the relevant activities, ignore distractions, and engage in behavior needed for specific tasks. In most classrooms, circle time is an opportunity for all children and teachers to come together for a shared lesson or activity. A protective factor is an attribute or skill, like self-regulation, that helps an individual effectively manage stressful events or circumstances.
