ABSTRACT

The Foguang Shan temples that Mr. Kris Yao's firm designed are for a Mahayana school based in Taiwan. Located in Raleigh, North Carolina, Fo Guang Shan Monastery project uses a gabled roof design to echo the style of the neighboring houses. Located in a historical park in Bussy Saint George, Fo Guang Shan Monastery project contains three "walls" that run horizontally and house the main circulation corridors to all the functions. The monastery sits on the Guandu plain, facing the Keelung River, with the Datun Mountain as its backdrop. Mr. Yao says that "Water-Moon is a modern Zen monastery", he also explains the process of translating a theoretical principle into massed material. He found that Chinese sutras are very powerful. The Diamond sutra and the Heart sutra, the two sutras that are beloved in Chinese Buddhist traditions.
