ABSTRACT

Mr. Anssi Lassila, principal and founder of the Office for Peripheral Architecture (OOPEAA), began working while he was still a student. He was interested in making a very interesting, new public building and he also interested in exploring an ecumenical shape, a very universal space that could be a church. That involves not just practical skills, but also an initial interaction with the site. That first project was a religious commission, a competition to be specific. In the first project, Karsamaki, the site is in the middle of the field of nowhere and it's quite a small building. The Klaukkala project was also a competition: It is a very multifunctional building because it is a small chapel. The Kuokkala church was yet another competition. Mr. Lassila says that "there is a big difference between the US and Finland". "It's because they have a one large religion in Finland".
