ABSTRACT
If regular education classroom teachers are to successfully teach ADD students they will need assistance. ManyState Education Agencies, aware of the limitations that regular education teachers have, both in terms of time constraints and preparation, are incorporating prereferral intervention programs to assist them. Broadly defined, prereferral intervention is a systematic and collaborative effort to assist regular education teachers to utilize interventions with hard-to-teach students. Prereferral intervention programs use relatively easy modifications of the classroom environment or instructional program that can be implemented by the regular classroom teacher. Despite their simplicity of use, these interventions can be very effective in producing desired changes in pupil performance. Some teachers already use several ofthese intervention strategies. Peer teaching, moving a student's seat, having students monitor their own behavior, contracting for better academic performance, teaching a learning strategy, etc. are familiar, informal interventions.
