ABSTRACT

The primary characteristics of ADD are not difficult to spot in a classroom. However, not all children who exhibit signs of inattention, impulsivity, or hyperactivity have attention deficit disorder. These same symptoms can be the result of numerous factors. Children who are frustrated by difficult schoolwork may display inattention. Students who are preoccupied by problems at home, with friends, or elsewhere may have trouble staying focused and concentrating. Nervousness can produce restless, fidgeting behavior. Unmotivated students often do not complete assignments or pay attention. Certain medical conditions can result in inattention. Many of these problems are commonly found in children and should not be confused with ADD.
