ABSTRACT

Many people believe the best way to train children is to reward them when they do something they like and punish them when they do something they don't like. And it is unquestionably true that in this way they can "shape" a child's behavior. However, rewards and punishments can have undesired side effects. The rewarded or punished child may become dependent and fearful, rebellious and antagonistic, sneaky and untruthful, servile and unsure.
