ABSTRACT

Alfred Adler was born on February 7, 1870 in Rudolfschein, Austria, a suburb of Vienna, the son of a middle class grain merchant. Being the second born of eight children, he grew up in the shadow of a talented older brother. At the time, Vienna was one of the most important cultural centers of Europe known not only for its music (Mozart, the Strausses, Mahler) but for its art and science as well. Vienna was a mixture of gaiety and serious endeavors.
