ABSTRACT

Many of Adler's early writings had to do with feelings of inferiority and the ways we compensate or make up for them. At the time, around 1907, he was still associated with Freud and the idea of compensation, particularly for organ inferiority, seemed reasonably compatible with the Freudian notion of displacement. In displacement, the satisfaction of a frustrated instinct could be at least partially fulfilled by finding a substitute object as illustrated in the case of a sexually frustrated male who seeks satisfaction by attending X-rated movies or reading sexy novels.
