ABSTRACT

The next step in the evolution of Adler's system led to the development of future goals towards which we strive. Freud had considered the goals in life to be the objects which served to satisfy our instincts; food for hunger, a member of the opposite sex for the sex instinct, and so on. Early in his career, Adler had differed with Freud regarding both the goals and the nature of the striving forces. In this chapter, we shall consider the nature of the goals and how they are formulated. In the following chapter, we shall consider the nature of the striving forces.
