ABSTRACT

Having discussed some of the most general stimulus-analyzing properties of the IPM, we will now turn to a discussion of some general response factors. As we saw previously, Sokolov’s model involved a stimulus analyzing stage which in turn controlled a separate response stage. One of the basic tenets of match-mismatch theory is that while it certainly makes sense to divide neural functions in terms of this distinction, it is not appropriate to conclude that a strictly sequential system is in operation. Instead, the performance of different types of responses have differing, direct effects on stimulus analysis. It is argued that these response effects on the stimulus analyzing capacities of the IPM provide an excellent means of making functional distinctions between response classes.
