ABSTRACT

Although in previous sections we showed how the IPM could process the stimulus environment in rather precise detail, no distinctions were made in terms of the relative significance of various stimuli. Now we are faced with situations where it is clear that some stimuli have a qualitatively different effect on the organism than do other stimuli, i.e., reinforcing versus non-reinforcing stimuli. The simplest solution to this in terms of the structure of the IPM would be a component which processed reinforcers and one which processed non-reinforcers. Let’s examine the properties of the reinforcer system first.
