ABSTRACT

As mentioned previously, the rest principle is not a specific physiological process. Instead, it is a general rule that neurons are postulated to obey. There are numerous processes that could cause neurons to act in accordance with the principle. In this chapter we consider the empirical data showing that such processes do exist. We first look at variations in the receptivity of the postsynaptic cell, which others (e.g., Huttunen, 1973) have postulated as being the major factor responsible for the strengthening of synapses and thus for learning.
