ABSTRACT

A full understanding of the developmental tasks involved in becoming a stepfamily requires an appreciation of the context within which this developmental process must take place. We begin Chapter Two with two theoretical models of healthy functioning: the Gestalt Experience Cycle, and the Gestalt Interactive Cycle. These models help us to set the stage for stepfamily development. They help to illuminate the unique qualities of stepfamily structure and to highlight the dilemmas and opportunities it creates for members of remarried families. Chapters Three, Four and Five together provide a full description of the Stepfamily Cycle, which draws its language and sequencing from the Gestalt theoretical framework.
