ABSTRACT
The wish that remarriage will immediately create a new united family, and the gathering awareness that it does not, mark the progression through the three Early Stages: Fantasy, Immersion, and Awareness. For many stepfamilies, the key to getting started with the work of the Early Stages lies in relinquishing enough of the fantasies and “shoulds” they bring to engage in the real work needed.
