ABSTRACT

Thus far we have described our schema for processing countertransference reactions with only brief mention of clinical examples. In the present chapter, we shall reverse this emphasis so as to bring more of an experience-near quality to our presentation. We will describe three clinical vignettes in some depth. Each vignette demonstrates various important aspects of countertransference as it is experienced over time in psychoanalytic treament. The vignettes are derived from careful reconstruction of notes of actual case material, with appropriate modifications to protect confidentiality. We have interrupted the flow of the case material at selective points to interject schematic analyses of the manner in which the clinical material depicts aspects of our sequence for processing countertransference reactions.
