ABSTRACT

Social psychologists have devoted considerable attention to understanding the effects of personality and the self on specific social behaviors. Despite this attention to the integration of personality and social psychology, students may underestimate the extent to which dispositions influence everyday social behavior the exercise demonstrates to students that the field of social psychology includes active researchers who are excited about their research and their lives. The classroom demonstration has many advantages for instructors. It can be used in a number of courses, including introductory psychology, personality, social psychology, and consumer psychology. The author conducted this exercise in an introductory Social Psychology class. For many students, this exercise resulted in their first exposure to the Internet. This demonstration has several desirable features. First, it tends to replicate well. Second, it is suitable for use in a variety of courses, including personality, social, interpersonal relations, motivation, and human sexuality.
