ABSTRACT

Multiple-choice exams, short-answer exams, essay exams, oral exams, term papers, and class projects are traditional methods for assessing a student’s mastery of course material. Although all such evaluations should engage the student in the process of reviewing and synthesizing the course material, many students, even the brightest, apply the “least effort principle” in their preparations. Often their review is cursory and involves rote memorization rather than organized analysis.
