ABSTRACT
Developmentalists have begun to recognize the advantages offered by valid mathematical and statistical representations of relevant phenomena. The gains in economy and precision of description, and in predictive and inferential power, given by accurate mathematical expressions are necessary if significant advances in empirical approaches to the study of development are to be realized.
