ABSTRACT

It seems clear from the research evidence that problem-solving style, attributional style, achievement motivation, locus of control and emotional reactivity are causally implicated in the stress process. The model is based on current evidence and suggests a way forward in integrating the research efforts of those interested in the stress phenomenon. The experienced employee may be able to offset the stress of a similar situation through having support from established friendships, being better able to prioritise tasks, and having the confidence to say no to his or her boss. There is insufficient integrative research to allow one to produce a definitive model of the stress process, but it would appear that research in the area is at the stage where a model is required to guide future research if some of the unnecessary noise in the process is to be removed.
