ABSTRACT
In order to discuss briefly the evolution of structures over a period of 2,000 years, we have no choice but to eliminate all the differences of style that are purely architectural, and to reduce buildings to their basic structural constituents. We also have to use modern technology when we make a statical analysis; this is acceptable so long as we bear in mind that the early builders did not think in this way, but solved their problems by intuition and experience.
