ABSTRACT
During the last few years our idea of early Mediterranean seafaring has been completely changed by a substance not immediately connected with the sea. Obsidian is a black volcanic glass whose sharp edges, when fractured, were highly prized by prehistoric man. It is also now one of the best indicators there is of early sea voyages.
