ABSTRACT
The reed boats and the dug-out derivatives described in the last chapter would have been quite capable of carrying the limited quantities of obsidian involved. Nor were there then any other goods which would have demanded bigger-capacity craft. Settlements in the early agricultural stage had to be self-sufficient as far as food was concerned because they could not rely on seaborne traffic to supplement their own resources: that would have been too uncertain.
