ABSTRACT

A hostess invites a guest in, not by pointing the way ("Go in there,") but rather with a spreading gesture that opens the way for the guest's entrance and promises hospitalit y. The hostess 's arm sweeps through the horizontal plane, creating multi-dimensional spatial configurations. Shaping in planes creates the structure for complex relationships and meanings; shaping is about relationships, about how parts are interconnected (Madden, 1993b) . Using a directional movement, one can point to another person; shaping in planes, one can enclose another in an embrace (Loman and Foley, 1996).
