ABSTRACT

There appears to be a rekindling of interest in spirituality in the United States. For many, this resurgence is likely to stem from a dissatisfaction and accompanying malaise with materialism as well as individualism. Much of religion and spirituality comes from a realm of experience that stands outside of psychology and family dynamics. Although it exerts a salient role in family life, spirituality cannot be understood in terms of boundaries, emotionality, and concepts such as differentiation. However, religious traditions do differ around the extent to which the individual is emphasized versus being viewed as an interdependent member of a holistic universe.
