ABSTRACT
I write of popular religion. All societies have a religion, and religion has always been popular. It always takes on the flavor and formulas of a particular culture. Not only is religion a social phenomenon, but, as Emile Durkheim observed, society is a religious phenomenon. 1 The substance of culture is religion and the form of religion is culture. Religion, Paul Tillich wrote, is whatever people take seriously. 2
