ABSTRACT
Awakenings and religious revivals have always been shaping forces of American culture. The first settlers to British North America came when the Great Puritan Awakening raged in England. Only a strong belief in God’s will and guidance could cause tens of thousands to leave hearth and home and sail over uncharted seas for the “howling wilderness” full of savage beasts and beastly savages.
