ABSTRACT

This chapter suggests that where any form of sexual abuse is concerned, regardless of the age of the survivor, that he/she use the analogy that he/she had just arrived from another planet and knows nothing about the sexual behaviours of human beings. If the patient, due to fear of judgment, punishment or rejection, leaves out specific and graphic details, the doctor may make a wrong diagnosis and then prescribe the wrong medication and treatment. Therapist's Role is important for the therapist to define his/her role as a 'therapist' to the survivor. The chapter explains the use of a few carefully chosen cue words rather than the lengthy lectures or comments that therapists so often use. The social worker on the case was informed and reluctantly discussed the 'fun games' with 'Tony' and 'Jill's' parents who surprisingly readily admitted that this was their only pleasure since they couldn't afford TV or any other form of entertainment.
