ABSTRACT

At the start of an important day, fifteen of us had gathered on May 1, 2002, to speak at a conference on Developmental Disabilities/Mental Retardation (DD/MR). After greeting one another in the great hall of the New Haven Union Train Station for an adventure into New York City and a prestigious international conference, our huddle started moving toward the escalators for the descent to the train platforms. We were excited to see so many members attending and were happy to be able to attend together. This was the group's third visit to the conference to speak about the Rainbow Support Group (RSG), and everyone was excited about rounding out our "gay day" with a quick visit to Greenwich Village. For some members, this would be their first time traveling to New York City, riding on the subway, visiting gay sites in the Village, and speaking in public. The day was off to a great start—we were full of anticipation, the culmination of four years of hard work and camaraderie.
