ABSTRACT

Usually, people coming for help are confused about what to do. Reflecting a client's verbal and nonverbal behavior is an important counseling skill designed to help a client gain a clearer understanding of his or her feelings. In reflecting verbal and nonverbal behavior, the helper points out aspects of the client's behavior and feelings. The message to the client is one of sincere interest and support: “I am listening closely to you, and want to share with you what I am observing to help you solve your problem.” Accurate reflection is an important counseling skill to help a client solve a problem. This chapter outlines the components of making good reflecting statements.
