ABSTRACT

It has long been recognized that analogies are of fundamental importance to human cognition (Polya, 1971; Spearman, 1923). There have also been a number of attempts to incorporate analogies into artificial intelligence (Burstein, 1983; Evans, 1968; Winston, 1982). In chapter 1, I pointed out that mental models can be based on analogies. In chapter 2, an analogy was compared with a representation, on the basis that the former is a mapping from one representation to another, whereas the latter is a mapping from representation to the environment. In this chapter I examine the role of analogies in cognitive development.
