ABSTRACT
The general problem of “naming” pertains to the transformation of material as yet unexploited for symbolic reference into vehicles which serve to indicate and depict events or parts of events. For the examination of this problem here we shall make use of the findings of several studies, all of which deal with the representation of various referents by means of linear-graphic vehicles.
