ABSTRACT

A major aim of our experimental inquiries into linear (and other forms of nonverbal) representation has been to determine the nature of symbolic organization of experience at levels close to imagery and gesture and to contrast such symbolic organization with that reflected in the codification of experience in a typical Indo-European language, English. Stated in developmental terms, we sought to ascertain the changes that occur in representation when a linguistically encoded, referent is represented in media conducing to a quite marked shrinkage of distance between vehicle and referent, that is, in media which are structured to form “natural” symbols.
