ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we present an overview of some of the major develop, mental changes in symbol-situations, that is, changes which—in accord with the “orthogenetic principle” (Chapter 1)—occur in the direction of an increasing differentiation of the components of symbol-situations and of increasing integrative systematization (autonomization) of symbolic forms. In the following, then, we focus predominantly on the aspect of differentiation utilizing the developmental notion of “distancing” or “polarization,” and shall only briefly touch in this chapter on the correlative developmental aspects of “autonomization.”
