ABSTRACT

The ending of an intimate relationship can be heartbreaking, both to the affected couple and to those close to them. A common assumption is that these painful endings are often unforeseen events unrelated to those events involved in the formation of a close relationship. Yet breakups may not always be as inexplicable or unpredictable as suspected. In fact, issues raised in relationship disengagement may be closely linked to choices made in relationship initiation.
