ABSTRACT

Two modes of treatment are defined by the avenue through which a therapeutic effect is sought—psychosocial and medical/somatic—and both modalities must be considered in treatment planning for the majority of patients. In contrast to the modes of treatment, the formats of treatment describe a more specific system of delivering the treatment mode. Among medical treatments, the formats reflect drug groupings and electroconvulsive shock therapy (ECT). Among the psychosocial treatments, formats reflect individual, group, marital, and family service delivery systems.
