ABSTRACT

Abraham Maslow is said to have once remarked that if you only have a hammer you treat everything like a nail. The history of psychotherapy has repeatedly confirmed Maslow’s observation. Sad to say, the preponderance of contemporary clinicians still reach for their favorite tool when confronted with puzzling or unsettling situations. It is not uncommon for our inveterate colleagues to recommend the identical treatment (i.e., their treasured proficiency) to virtually every patient who crosses their paths.
