ABSTRACT

Relatively little is known about the changes in neglect over time and few studies have charted the natural history of neglect. Some researchers have found that neglect is commonly seen in the early stages after stroke, but resolves completely by 6 months. In fact, features of neglect can continue to be disruptive in patient’s daily activities long after the apparent resolution of the more florid symptoms, as we saw in Chapter 1. One study of recovery of neglect after right stroke found that the median period of recovery for 50% of the patients was 9 weeks; by 12 weeks there was a 90% chance of recovery. An illustration of recovery in one right brain damaged patient can be seen in the case of performance on the BIT subtests shown in Fig. 5.1. Here, we can see that the patient recovery is different for each test.
