ABSTRACT
This chapter deals with different manifestations of aggression in public life: bullying, ethnic and politically motivated aggression, collective violence, and homicide. It shows that aggression is a distressing feature of many areas of public life. The school, the workplace, the football stadium, and, not least, the street are common venues for aggressive encounters. A large proportion of school children experience acts of aggression from their peers. The chapter examines two forms of everyday aggression in the public sphere: school bullying and workplace harassment, both found to have lasting negative effects on their victims. It explores instances of aggression in which the group membership of the target person motivates or triggers aggressive acts towards that person. The chapter also examines aggressive actions performed by groups in which the very fact that individuals are part of a larger group is thought to change the way they behave.
