ABSTRACT
This chapter reviews of universal approaches to the prevention of aggression. It examines the potential effectiveness of catharsis, punishment, and anger management training as approaches targeting the individual aggressor. The chapter describes the strategies of prevention and intervention targeting particular forms of aggression: bullying and gang violence, domestic violence, and sexual aggression. It draws upon general principles of aggression reduction, intervention strategies in these areas are custom tailored to address the unique characteristics of different forms of aggression. The chapter describes prevention approaches that are directed at specific forms of aggressive behaviour. It looks at strategies targeting the individual and then move on to measures implemented at the community or societal level. The chapter shows the scale of the institutional costs incurred in trying to prevent bullying and gang violence and the distress caused to the victims of these aggressive behaviours.
