ABSTRACT

In 1960 Gurin, Veroff, and Feld reported on their seminal nationwide survey (circa 1957) on how Americans view their mental health. They were interested in two broad areas of concern: (1) feelings of adjustment, which explored some of the satisfactions and dissatisfactions people were deriving from life, and (2) methods of handling emotional problems, which explored the general approach that people were taking in handling tensions and problems.
