The only difference, then, between the simile and the metaphor conditions was that the phrase "was like" was replaced by the words "really was." Although this difference is trivial for a normal communicator-what the speaker means or intends in each case is likely to be identical-the prediction was that this slight change would have a dramatic effect on the ability of mind blind participants with autism to decode the sentence meaning.
