ABSTRACT
It is not enough to be able to identify an overly resistant language-delayed child, but identification is a necessary first step. In this chapter, we describe procedures to reduce resistant and noncompliant behaviors effectively. Unfortunately, it is not enough simply to eliminate these behaviors, but elimination is a necessary second step. Thus, effective procedures to promote compliance are also presented, and these compliance activities represent a positive third step toward restoring a behavioral readiness for talking. The compliance activities create a behavioral receptivity for imitative and spontaneous speech where resistance may have occurred previously.
